Sarocha Devapalin delivered an invited talk titled “Rooted in Thailand, Growing Internationally,” sharing her personal and professional journey from studying landscape architecture in Thailand to establishing a career in the United Kingdom.

A key part of the talk reflected on her decision to pursue a master’s degree in landscape architecture in London, and how this experience became a pivotal step in shaping her international career. She discussed the transition between different education systems, the challenges of adapting to a new cultural and academic environment, and how studying in the UK opened up pathways into professional practice.

The session went on to explore her career development within the UK, including gaining experience across a range of project types and working environments, as well as the process of achieving professional chartership. Insights were shared on the realities of working in an international context – balancing design expectations, communication styles, and cultural perspectives.

More than a career overview, the talk aimed to inspire students and emerging designers to think ambitiously about their future while staying grounded in their identity. Sarocha emphasised that building an international career is not always a linear journey, but one shaped by curiosity, resilience, and the confidence to take opportunities beyond one’s comfort zone.

By connecting her roots in Thailand with her professional growth abroad, the talk highlighted the value of a global perspective in landscape architecture, encouraging others to explore opportunities across borders while maintaining a strong sense of place and identity.
